Good box call to start with

I've never put much though into box calls until last year when me a friend pulled out a late season gobbler with 15-20 mile an hour winds at 2 in the afternoon. I was amazed at how the call cut into that holler and fired up two mature toms within two gobbles I was looking at them down the end of my gun barrel. I was able to end my Indiana season with a nice mature gobbler. My friend was using a MAD cherry bomb box call.

So my question is I have always used mouth calls or pot calls, does anyone have any suggestions on a good beginners box call for me to try? It won't be my primary call but I would probably use it mainly on windy days when nothing else is working. Any ideas?

There's a pile of custom box call makers and one of the best is my friend Ed Terefencko. That being said I don't think you could go wrong picking up a Lynch Fool Proof box call for your first box call. Super easy to play as the name implies.

One of my favorites that won't break the bank is a SS Custom Calls Field grade Kwila/butternut.  Al and Josh Shoemaker are super nice guys and stand behind their calls. I don't think you could go wrong with any combination from them.  :z-twocents:

Ok it has been said a ton of custom call makers on here, nuff said...as you will not find a larger or more experienced group any where else. As for a box call to start with, consider your ability to use one, the more user friendly the call is the easier it will be for you to pick one up and practice with becoming more consistent with your calling...consistent...is the key word here. There are several good makers, but some calls require tilting the paddle a certain way or having the starting point located in closer to the front or sometimes towards the back of the call. One call maker that I would definitely recommend would be Charlie Anderson, his calls are user friendly, no tricks or twists, just straight forward usable boxes, I would look up his videos, and give him a pm....

Totally agree with this. All the other makers that have been mentioned make fantastic calls. I would give a few of these guys a call and have them play a call for you. Buy one you like the sound of and the take the time to practice. You'll be amazed at how quickly you'll be able to make good turkey vocalizations and then realize with practice how much you can do with a good box. Other guys to consider are Jeff McKamey(jmck), Frank Kreuer, Tim Bullock, and Bob Fulcher. There are a lot of great makers.

I have to agree with Bill Lyman about Ed Terefencko. One of the best in my opinion. Al & Josh and Albert Paul also make great sounding calls that are very reasonably priced with very fast delivery.

Thanks everyone for all the great advice that's why I love this site. I'm gonna do a little checking around, and figure out which one to try, then I'll practice with it. I'm excited to learn another skill for the turkey woods, I'm sure my wife will appreciate all the practice as well!

I have to agree with some of the others in that for about the same price as the Fool Proof I think you could buy yourself one of the SS field grade boxes from Al Shoemaker and be very pleased with your decision. Call him up and I'm sure he can steer you in the right direction for the sound your looking for.
