Could the good people on this forum tell me what they think of Steve Mann's box calls as far as construction and the sound they produce :z-twocents:

It depends on your own personal ear and what you like, what you believe a hen sounds like and if the box call produces that sound.  Some box calls are limiting and some are diverse with the skill of the call maker tuning it for multiple hens.  There are many such great call makers whose names we are familiar Steve is just one and many more whose names we do know so well, but who are excellent call makers too.  My advice would be to get several opinons and run some of the calls if possible.

I have yet to run one of Lamar's calls. I have some of Neil's. Steve's sound identical if not better. With a Mann made call you get the three notes of a true hen yelp that Neil talks about in his books. You would not believe the amount of work that goes into a Mann made call and how many end up in the trash because Steve feels they aren't good enough to put his name on them.  They are the best I've ever heard.  If you order one from Steve I suggest you let him pick the wood combination.  By doing that, he will build your call with the best wood he has available at that time. I would also recommend you get a field grade call if you are looking for the best sound possible.  I would order a field grade and a paddle. Both are always in my vest.

Steve makes as good of a box as you're going to find. I make box calls and currently have 3 on order from him . He's a mighty fine goy too !

I've always heard about a two note yelp. Is this 3 note something different or am I missing something here? I haven't had the oppurtunity to read Neil's book. But, from what I hear, Steve makes a fine box call.....probably the closest to a Cost box.
