The 870.  The possibilities are as endless as as Obama's lies.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

Don't even think about threading the barrel on the 10 gauge. Tru Choke threads is all that are available and then your choke selection is NONE!!

Call the cousin and see what he says.  Since you've had his guns for about 15 years, he's probably forgot about them.  Who leaves their guns with someone for that long?  I'd tell him there's a storage fee for the price of his 870.  Then go build your turkey gun.

Don't worry about it being 28in barrel.  You can always have it cut down and rethreaded if you want.  I had a 30in barrel cut down to something like 25 1/4" which was right in front of the rib support.  If you get Sumtoy to do the work, William will make you a choke based on what she'll you want to shoot.

If your deer gun shoots as good as you say it does, I'd leave it alone.

Btw wildtigertrout shoots a 24" barrel and budtrips dream gun is one with a 23" barrel, taken from their previous posts.

Trust me it makes a difference when your putting on miles if that is how you hunt. Also your looking at about $150 minimum for red dot if that's what you want on the 870 and another $25 for sling mounts if you want to put them on....the Stevens already has them installed. If money isn't a big deal then I'd rather customize the 870 as well, but for practicality of what is rightfully yours an not borrowed the Stevens is a no brainer for me.
You are right I do like 24-26" barrels but I honestly would not have a problem with a 28" barrel. In my previous post I was referencing what was available years ago and how far we have come. I do think 30" barrels are to long but that was all you could get at that time so most serious turkey hunters used them. BTW alot of turkey hunters even today still wear cotton. LOL
Deer see you and think you are a stump. The Old Gobbler sees a stump and thinks it is YOU!

While the Stevens pump gun does shoot slugs good - I never ever use it for deer hunting any more since rifles became legal.  I always use my 30-30 now.  So, there is no real point keeping it just for deer.  I'm leaning towards sending it to Sumtoy, because I do own it and don't have to worry about buying it from my cousin or using it without his knowledge.  Plus, who knows, if I get it threaded, maybe it would shoot slugs even better with a rifled choke?

Keep us updated on what happens, I think it's cooler hunting with a gun not everyone has anyway....everybody and their brother turkey hunts with an 870, I used to but not anymore!

The 870 would be a great gun for the price and like gooserbat said ,the possibilites are endless.

Will do, stripped it all down last night down to the barrel and receiver - since the barrel does not remove.  Receiver and Barrel at least seem very solid - its all solid thick steel.  The diameter at the end of the barrel is over .9"  so Sumtoy should have no problem having enough metal to work with.

Sounds like a cool and different build! Keep us updated with your progress, looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
