Meet the "Black Gun" It has many victims.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

Doesn't matter ... the gun can be blaze orange. Movement is the problem.

I have hunted turkeys since 1992, started out with 870's, Black.  Hunted with them until last year then I went to camo guns.  Killed a lot of turkeys with those 870's.  One is my daughters now and one is my backup gun.  I hunt with Winchester's now.  Like tomstopper said Non of my camo matches, not shirts or pants , hat or headnet.  Before the days of camo, people use to hunt in a checkered red pattern shirt.  I would say use whatever works for you, don't worry about a couple of birds scooting away from you setup, it will happen with good camo also.

One thing I forgot to mention never use deet if you have a camo gun it can take your finish off.  Turkey gun barrels that are not camo I use Birchwood Casey Bore Scrubber 2-in-1 Bore Cleaner, it is very strong, gets plastic and a number of things.  It is not good for a camo gun as it will damage the camo.  For my camo gun barrels I use Hoppe's Elite Gun Cleaner, I don't think it gets plastic.  After I use the gun cleaner I use slip 2000 gun lube, it gets plastic out.  Hope all of this helps, if you like a particular lubricant or cleaner, if it does not say it is safe for camo finishes be sure to call the Mfg. and ask them.  If you damage your camo and want it fixed it is pretty expensive.   Good luck

I took a buddy hunting for his first turkey hunt some years back.  He showed up with a Montefeltro with a beautifully engraved nickel plated receiver and the improved cylinder choke. :z-dizzy:
But we got him a bird that day, and he is forever hooked now.  But he uses a camo'd gun now.

shot a lot of toms with black guns, you just don't want a shiny gun, wood , black or camo.

Now that's funny right there!!!   :TooFunny: :z-guntootsmiley:

Genesis 27:3 - Now then, get your weapons—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.

True. I wish he was jealous of this A5 that is taking up space now.

My impression of camo...  It potentially helps, and almost certainly does not hurt.

A camo pattern that blends into the surroundings a bit better allows more room for error.

The more contrast to your surroundings, the more noticable any movement will be.  I think that is the bottom line.  Green camo and a brown background, or brown camo in a green background will probably stand out as much more more than a black gun in either situation (as shawdows are always present in nature).

Whether camo or black, I prefer more of a matt finish.  I have seen shiney camo patterns that stand out much more than a matt black finish does as well.  A shiny black finish stands out more to me as well...

And hunting waterfowl as well as turkeys, it is my impression that pressured birds seem to be more aware of their surroundings than non-pressured birds.  A big turkey tent that works on that private land, might make a wary ol' public tom more hesitant.
Did I do that?

Fly fishermen are born honest, but they get over it.

have taken quite a few birds with a blued/wood shotgun, movement is the key,not the gun.
it's not the harvest,it's the chase
