My Comedy of Errors Hunt last Friday

I've been doing this turkey hunting thing for a long time and fortunately can still laugh at myself.
Get up 4:15 AM...drive 20 minutes ,walk half mile get set up within 80-100 yds of a roost area, I'm in woods on edge of a corn stalk field. . Hear a couple of birds gobbling, hens do their thing.  Several hens fly down , three-four jakes and what looked like a two year old tom...all fly down about 75 yds in front of me.  I thought I had heard another tom gobbling but this land is right on a river and it's not unusual for some of the birds to fly down on the other side that I can't hunt.  Woods are silent...no more tree calls, no more gobbling in the trees.  Decide to do a little calling to the two year old...season's been on a week and I haven't had much time to hunt...no score yet.  Realize with all these hens he's probably not too interested.  Long story short about 20 minutes after fly down, I'm working my box call...see movement to my right, a mature tom had slipped out of the woods totally silent and had started edging his way towards me , trees prevented me from seeing him until he had busted me.  He didn't gobble once...guess he was using the other birds as his decoys to see if it was safe to come out??  Oh well always next time right!

noisy box call that seems to sound like a flock of juvenile hens pecking their way through a wheat field

Ahhhh, the stealthy "Ninja Turkey".
You may as well find a new place to hunt cause he could take YOU out! :TooFunny:
Love to hunt the King of Spring!

LOL!  Something similar happened to me Saturday morning.  Everything was going my way...it was foggy, so I able to sneak in close to a roost and set up.  The wind was still, and I could every turkey in the county sound off.  Of course, the ones close to me decided to leave with real hens and head the other direction.  Unbeknownst (if that's really a word) to me, the ninja bird sneaked in behind me in some tall grass.  He was 15 feet over my left shoulder when I happened to glance in his direction.  Busted...couldn't even swing on him in time.

My buddy and I refer to those toms as SBD gobblers. They come in Silent only to Bust ya and your left eating their Dust. ;D

Don't feel bad. I killed a beautiful maple tree last sunday. We all mess up and if you can't laugh at yourself then you may not want to continue hunting turkeys. It usually takes me a bit but in the end I see the humor. It's better when it happens to someone else though.
