Vacation Help-- Alabama maybe?
May 18, 2014, 08:38:59 PM
Hey guys, The wife wants to maybe go south for a vacation, maybe Alabama. We're from Indiana and was thinkin of place like Gulf Shore's Alabama. Is this a decent place/area to go? How about the area around it. Just don't know much about the area, site's, thing's to do, etc. We would like to go to the gulf coast if possible. It's about 11hours for us.
Thanks for any info!!

Gulf shores is a great place and clean. There is a big pier to fish off of. We would fish every evening till 3 or 4 in the morning. Great outfit for bowfishing stingrays down there and very affordable. Plenty of charter boats too.

I live 75 minutes from Gulf Shores. Our family will be down there next week to vacation.
Yes, it is a great beach area with lots of food, fishing, golf, shopping, and family activities.
This weekend they are having a huge party at The Hangout. PM me on this site and I will be happy to answer questions.
The red snapper season is only 9 days this year from June 2-10 effectively but they are plentiful IF you can get a charter. It will probably have to be a party boat at best.
Pensacola is nearby and there is an excellent Naval Museum, Mobile is close and there is a Tanger Outlet just a few miles up the road.

I usually stay at the Grand Hotel at Point Clear. From there you can take day trips to Gulf Shores and Gulf State Park, the Tanger Outlets in Foley, and Mobile. Check the schedules at the Warf and the Hangout if your interested in concerts on the beach. Google Fort Gaines, Fort Morgan, and USS Alabama if your a history buff. Golf Course right across the road from the Grand Hotel if you play. The grounds at the Grand and Bellingrath Gardens across the bay if you like to see beautiful southern grounds work. Be sure and eat at Wolf's Bay in Foley and the Original Oyster House in Mobile or Gulf Shores, preferably the one in Mobile. Eat at LuLu's in Gulf Shores if your a Jimmy Buffett fan just to say you did.

I prefer Orange Beach over Gulf Shores for lodging simply due to the fact it's less congested. It's only a few minutes away from Gulf Shores so going there to eat is well within reason. Go to the Gulf Shores restaurants early though unless you like long waits. Foley is about 20-25 mins up the road from both places (way less traffic lights coming from OB though) and as others have stated they have a Tanger Shopping Mall, Mossy Oak store, and a variety of restaurants. Lamberts (again, get there early) is a restaurant in Foley I make a point to stop at any time I'm in the area. They have very good home cooked meals and if you leave there hungry it's your own fault! That general area is a great place to vacation.

Another option if you want to stay on the beach but away from the crowds would be to look into a condo or beach house out Fort Morgan Road. The beach houses work out really well if you have multiple families vacationing together.

My parents live at Orange Beach so I am down that way a good bit. I would stay in orange beach little bit more relaxed!! But just a few miles from gulf shores!! I am headed down this weekend to go catch a few fish and enjoy!

I also like orange beach... I am originally from pensacola and the perdido key/orange beach area is all nice and is a great place to take a trip. Pretty unique place with a ton of good seafood!!
