Finally ended the drought this morning
May 10, 2014, 12:46:16 PM
After 4 weeks and hunting 2 states I finally got to put a tag on a bird this morning in WV.Its been the most frustrating year of turkey hunting that I can remember for a long time.Anything and everything that could go wrong had me wondering if I would ever get to work a bird this year, but after this morning I proved to myself how quick your luck can change. On opening morning of WV season I got sprayed by a skunk, and that is how bad my luck has been since. This morning, while driving from one spot to the next,i saw a gobbler go out of sight in a field.Thinking since he's alone I might have a chance,i parked down the road and ran to try and close the distance as the wind was about 20mph by now.I got to a decent spot and gave a few loud series of yelps and he gobbled back from what sounded like a long way off so I tried to cut the distance when I saw his fan out in the field along with some more birds.Just great,he's henned up,so I really layed into it and just about every bird gobbled.I kept up the loud calling and the strutter turns and starts running to me,with 7 other gobblers following him.He outran them by about 50yds though and ran smack into a load of 5's,9"beard,1"spurs,18lbs.Sorry for such a long story but I'm just happy to get that skunk off my back.

Congrats! Sometimes it seems impossible to kill a bird and then other days they seem to have a death wish. When im having bad or no luck, i just keep telling myself Patience and Persistence. If you have them both, you will eventually have an opportunity. And that STINKS about the
skunk.lol
. Me and a buddy about got sprayed the other morning ourselves walking into the woods first thing.

Well Done, and share a pic.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons. However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

Congrats! Nice read.
If I had a dollar for every gobbler I thought I fooled I'd be well off!
