Does anybody know why they don't load #6 copper plated shot in 3" federal turkey thugs or winchester double x 20 ga. It's all #5 shot in fed. or win. I've killed lots of turkeys with six's at 1100 to 1150 fps. with the old 2 oz loads of #6s in federals.   cluck

You ask a very good question that has a lot of us 20 gauge guys puzzled.

The Turkey Thug staff last year was unanimous in #5 shot being their favorite size shot. But, most,if not all, use 12 gauge guns. Perhaps that is why they only have #5 shot for 20 gauge and it is the dead center between #4 and #6 shot. Nice try but it doesn't address the limited amount of shot as compared to the smaller yet very effective #6 shot.

A few years ago Win was trying out their HD load in Fla. and in 20 gauge they were using #5 shot also so they chose to straddle production complexity by only using #5 shot.

Federal Flite Control shells do include a 3"- 1 5/16 oz. - #6 copper-plated lead and you can buy a 25 round box of Winchester 3-1 1/4-#6 but not as a true turkey shell. Pheasant loads available as well.
To answer your question I know of more people who would like to have the #6 shot available in 20 gauge than any other size. We only get 1 1/4 - 1 5/16 oz. of shot in lead loads so why not use the smallest of the #4-#6 options?
Hopefully Winchester will get enough feedback from 20 gauge users to make the #6 available in a 20 gauge Longbeard shell for 2015. If they don't, I'm getting their pheasant load when it come sout to see how it performs.

I'm going to give the new pheasant loads a try myself.

I have federal turkey thugs in 6 shot 20 3" mag WalMart had a few and I mean a few boxes shoot great

Yoder409

Has anyone patterned the 1 1/4 oz. pheasant loads to see how they stack up ??

I believe most of them are copper-plated and buffered.  I don't really care what picture is on the box if they shoot well.

Philipriley 16: Would you please look on the box that contained the 3" 20 ga. #6 lead turkey thugs and send the item number. I can't find one listed on federal's web site. Many Thanks,    cluck

I will be shooting the #6 SuperPheasant 3'' Win ammo this year. It beat the DoubleXX, Supreme Turkey, Remington Nitro, Remington Prermier Turkey, etc. It beat them by a mile to be honest. Lead loads are all I can get locally for the moment and those win pheasant loads are the best I can find. Very huntable pattern 32-35 yards.
