Well, this past weekend turned out to be a pretty exciting one for us! Started on Friday when my buddy called me asking me if I would like to come and pick up a new coon hound puppy that he had at his house. After discussing it with Kayla and showing her the pics we just had to have him. So we went and picked him up and brought him home and immediately fell in love with him. We decided to name him "Trooper" and we just know he is going to be a great companion and great hunter!! Definitely looking forward to making alot of great memories with this beautiful Walker Hound.
Saturday came and we were headed up to Flatwoods to work the WV Bowhunters Association show and banquet. I woke up and it was 54 degrees outside. As Craig and I climbed in the car to start the drive I said, "Its a beautiful day, I know turkeys will be gobbling and I know a place to stop." So we pulled off the road right at perfect time and shut the car off. I climbed out and let out a big owl hoot with my mouth and the hillside lit up with gobblers, 6 at least. I continued to hoot and they continued to answer every time. It was like heavenly music to my ears and man did it get me fired up!! I had to look up and just say, "Thank you Lord for letting us experience this yet again". Never gets old to me!
So we made it up to Flatwoods and got setup for the show and banquet. Had a great time up there, met alot of great people and got to talk with some absolute legends! First I walked over and sat down with Lonnie Sneed, great turkey calling champ and call maker and talked to him for about 45 minutes, what an amazing guy that has a tremendous amount of knowledge and stories for days!! I bought two of the most beautiful calls Ive ever seen from him, and they sound even better than they look!!
A little bit later we are sitting there at the table and a guy walks up to us with a cowboy hat on and sticks his hand out and says, "Hello, Wayne Carlton". I was pretty much in Awe. For those that dont know, Wayne Carlton is the innovator of using the diaphram mouth call to call for elk. He started all of that and can make just about any animal sound you want with a mouth call. He then sold his diaphram mouth calls to Hunters Specialties. Pretty awesome stuff! As we sat there and talked to him I was just like a sponge soaking in every bit of what these two men had to say!! Had a great show up there and even better banquet, always a fun time getting to share a room with some legends as well as some other great outdoorsman with a passion!!
