Got myself a newer H&R 12 gauge, 3" modified barrel. Love the gun but i tested some federal flite controls today and was not pleased. Albeit they were 2 3/4 shells, the pattern just wasnt pleasant. So im doing some reading and i see alot of folks having good luck with the turkey thugs from federal. Any thoughts or ideas?

With a modified choke,go and sell it and get one with a full choke, a modified is ok out to about 30 yards, try some 3in. Federal flight control 7 shot 1 5/8 oz. this will help in pellet count, and trust me they are dense and do not take just a few to hit the brain or spine. How far did you shoot the shells? Just kidding on selling it, try some other shells and see how it does, the Longbeards are looking promising for good pattern, but a modified choke max is arounf d 30 yards so keep this in mind.,Good luck.

If you are wanting to use 2 3/4" shells I did some checking and could only find 2 3/4 inch, Double X, #6 shot, high velocity, at "http//www.mackspu.com".  I would recommend using winchester Long Beard 3" #5 shot, some people prefer #6's but I like #5's.  They are suppose to be awesome.

I shot at 20-30-40. I used to use the winchester xx 3" that we call black death. Never had an issue with it and killed a turkey @ 38 yards a few seasons ago. But this gun ended up being at the short end of a family dispute. I got it back this christmas and just figured i would try the federal 2 3/4 out of it. Now it shoots low and ive never had that with this gun before. So im thinking i need to go back to black death or possibly try the longbeard or turkey thugs.

Hey buddy keep the gun and have William thread it for chokes, he did mine and it works great !!!! I think its only 35.00 to have it done. Good Luck!   William at Sumtoy

Ill keep that in mind. Im going to try some other shells first. I know this gun shoots well just need to find that right combo. This is the result of the 2 3/4 at 25 yards....

Are these lead 6 shot, the heavy weight 7 shot will out shoot this, more pellet count, and power. good luck finding a good shell for it.

You have the distance blacked out in your pic, but this pattern is beyond your gun's effective range with that shell. Shoot at a large sheet of paper. Draw a 10" circle around the densest part of your pattern. When your pellet count in that circle drops below 100, you have exceeded the max range for that load.

It was written for 40 but i took the shot around 25. If thats the max range for that shell then something is terribly wrong with federal flight controls. I took a bird last season with these shells and a smoothbore 870 with a cylinder bore. It had a great pattern at 30 out of that gun, but  30 was max on that gun/shell. I would have hoped the mod choke and longer barrel on the h&r wouldve been better but i guess not.
