I got word this past weekend that Dan Lutz of Greenfeild, MO passed Sat am.  Dan was one of those old time turkey hunters who started hunting in the late 1960's, and had killed so many birds he didn't even keep the beards.  I was fortunate enough to hunt a couple different times with Dan and howbeit his health had failed and he moved slower than he once did the light was still in his eye when a bird gobbled.

BTW he got a Double (2 in one shot) this past spring) That's the second pic with Bret Graves who was hunting with him that morning.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

My condolences to all his family and friends. :bible: :cross2:

May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?

One funny thing about Dan was even at his age and being a bit frail he wasn't a bit afraid of a 3.5" turkey load.

I hate to hear that.  I bet he had some stories to tell.
If I'm not back in five minutes, wait longer!

Sorry to hear of his passing. I've spent many morning watching the sun come up and woods come alive and that first gobble, thinking man this is heaven. I'm sure that your friend now has that for ever more.

Gooserbat, it was merely by luck that I happened to see this post. Dan and I were good friends, and actually started hunting together in the late 70's when he moved to Everton, where he moved into the house right across the street from me. We learned to hunt turkeys together the hard way, by trial and error.

Last time I saw Dan was probably close to 2 years ago when he stopped by the house. We used to hunt Kansas every year, and I took him on one trip out there after his health started failing (2007 or '08?). I intended every year since to get together with him for a spring hunt or two here, but it always seemed I was too busy. I've talked about running over and seeing him a dozen times the past year, but, again, just didn't get it done. Drives home the fact that we all need to make an effort to keep up with old friends. Time flies so quickly, and we just never know which hunt is going to be our last.

I'm shocked someone hadn't let me know about this, as my wife has numerous relatives and friends around Everton who knew Dan well, and knew that he and I were old hunting buddies.

Dan was, as you probably know, a real character, and I could, literally, tell you stories for hours about his exploits! He was also the tightest man I ever knew.  :) Thanks for posting this. I have a picture of him on my computer wearing what I'm guessing was the same camo outfit. Neill
