Agreed, I carry a maple over persimmon long box that has lots of rasp.
A quality paddle caller will most run itself.  It just needs someone to carry it around the woods. Yoder409

Hickory over Butternut will do what you want. Play with wall thickness until desired sound is achieved. They can be made really brash.
