Tail Feathers

I just picked up one of these chokes for my 24" ported 835.
Has anyone patterned this combo with the Hevi 13 3.5" sixes?

My search revealed nothing.

I will be shooting it next week.  It will probably be well up in the 80's when I shoot.  What does that heat do to patterns?

High temperatures, especially in the 80s and above, will very greatly influence patterns. You should see some of the best numbers and patterns from your choke and shell that it will produce. It's important to remember however that unless you hunt in very high temperatures, your hunting patterns may not resemble the ones you see.

Cooler air is more dense and causes patterns to scatter more quickly. The ambient temperature can also affect the performance of the shotshell itself. When you combine those 2 factors, it's easy to see how necessary it is to pattern at temperatures like those in which we hunt.

What we learn when we pattern in high temperatures is the "best" patterns a choke and shell will throw. If you don't see good patterns then, it's very unlikely that they will improve when temperatures drop.

Please let us know what you see.

Thanks,
Clark

Thanks Clark.  I remembered temperature had an effect but couldn't recall whether heat or cold was hard on patterns.
I bid on this choke on Ebay after seeing a thread on them, and later decided on an SSX.
I bid on one of those too but got outbid.  My first bid on the IC stood for five days so here I am with an IC.
I think I'll give it a try, I hear good things about them.
I'll post pics.  I hope it likes 3" shells, those 3.5" (which is all I have right now) are heck on my shoulder...which is apparently older than the rest of me. :toothy12:

You're welcome and I also understand about those shoulders.

Good luck.

Tailfeathers keep us posted as i to have that same combo to try out. I am curios to your results.

I am interested in hearing your results as well.  If I had to guess, I would say it would be in the 180 hit range.  More hits if shooting in high temps and humidity.

Well I have SOME results to report.  I got out today and doggone if the new choke didn't shoot high.  Probably my fault.  I found the gun was shooting low on my last hunt so after season I adjusted the red dot upwards what I thought it would need.  Too much evidently.
Half my pattern went over the paper target.

Very unscientific, but I made just the bottom half of a 10" circle over the best part of the patterns. using the top of the paper for the "centerline.  I only shot one each 3.5" H 13 6's and Mag Blends.  I didn't have any 3" shells to try.

Shots at measured 40 yards.
The 6's seemed to hit highest but I got 39 and 49 in the bottom quadrants.
The Mag Blends fared better, giving 69 and 60 in the bottom quadrants.
Of course, going high of paper, I had no upper quadrants of my 10" "circle" and based on the patterning, I think most of my pattern went high off paper.
Temp was 81 degrees this morning and it was very humid.
Sorry I forgot my camera and I couldn't get a full pattern to count, but I am very encouraged by what I saw with the Mag Blends.  The full 10" pattern will likely go into the 230-240 range by my estimation based on what I saw.
With the 6's in 3.5", I would guesstimate 180-190 in a full 10" circle.  These are only guesses tho.
Next time I go, I'll check sights before I pattern and have pics and good counts!

Sounds like my guess of 180 might not have been too far off.  I think if you wanted to get higher numbers out of the Hevi #6, you would want to try something around a .690 constriction.  I contacted Indian Creek about a month ago, and that is what they recommended for the Hevi 13 3-1/2in 2-1/4oz #6 load.

I got around 160 or so with my .690 Rhino.
Got a small bit better with a Carlson's .670.
I think, when I get it lined out, the IC will be the best by quite a bit.
