Questions on turkey hunting in FLorida as a non resident

Hello all,

My wife's brother and sister-in-law reside in Harmony Florida which is just outside of St. Cloud. We visit there once a year, and I think next year I may want to try turkey hunting here. I have a few questions for those of you who also live or hunt in Florida:

1) Costs- I am looking and I believe it will cost me $46.50-10 day non resident, $125.00 turkey tag, and $26.50 for the WMA Permit.

2) Public Ground-Can anyone point me to public land areas in the Harmony/St. Cloud areas (not looking for any specific hunting spot, just public ground I can research, the Florida site it tough for me to recognize given areas)

3) supplies- anything special I should pack. I imagine a thermacell is a given, with the mammoth mosquitos and such.

4) Precautions- any special things I need to watch out for. I don't really have to worry about venomous spiders, snakes, and alligators when hunting in PA, wondering if there is anything else I would need to watch out for.

I am going to try and contact a few private land owners and such around the area. I see turkey every time we visit so I am hoping for the best. I am thinking that gaining permission to hunt someones land may be tough considering I live over 1000 miles away and they don't know me from Adam.

Any help is appreciated. AGAIN i am not looking for specific spots just public land parcels of land would be great.

Thanks,

Mike

MIKE, there is Three Lakes Management area near St. CLOUD. I hunted there years ago when it first opened. I not heard any recent reports.

All of the above is correct. 3 Lakes has some turkeys, but you gotta fight the crowds. Fortunately, its a big WMA, so with some scouting, you could get away from the crowds. Don't know much about Bull Creek, other than it has turkeys, and crowds.
Thermacell and waterproof snake boots are a must!!
Looks like some of the closest WMA's to where you are going to be are Hilochee, Hilochee-Osprey Unit, Lake Marion, Kissimee Chain of Lakes. However, I haven't hunted any of those, so I can't help you there.
Most of the info you are looking for can be found at http://www.myfwc.com/.

Thanks guys,

I am used to the crowds hunting Public Land in South Western Pennsylvania. Is there any different calling methods or tactics that work better for Osceola's than Easterns.

In the south zone, calling loudly and calling often will often call in mature Cubans, most of which have good beards :TooFunny:

that's funny to those who know it's true. . . .

:TooFunny:  That is funny, and true!! I found out while duck hunting with friends in S. FLA that a lot of Hispanic males like hunting. Some of those that I knew to duck hunting later on took up turkey hunting too.
