Saw for the first time a bunch of toms laying down with feet tucked under themselves. First time I've ever seen this. I obviously know that when hens are on nest they do this but it was pretty neat sight. Mind you these are wild bird turned domestic for the most part. Was dropping my daughter off at my sisters. These birds have been around this area for years. I couldn't guess at how much they weigh. And ropes.....holy cow! Usually about 12 mature birds strutting around. Have only seen one hen over all the years. These birds sitting were on a driveway amongst two cars, lol. Keeping dry I'm sure. Which makes me think with all this rain it may be a bad year for poults and eggs, ugh.  We'll stop on shoulder of road and I'll call with windows open. All the birds will gobble at same time. Pretty awesome sight to see. 12 strutting birds gobbling at sounds from a Subaru, lol. Just thought I'd share.

I see it all the time - they just layup under a shady spot in a open area and take a nap - I notice turkeys do this after a windy night , my logic is on a breezy night they get real tired trying to stay ballanced and awake on the limb , they got to get some rest eventually so they do this when the opportunity presents itself during the day

I have seen it before as well. I watched three gobblers in a field milling around on a cold day. Two of them just laid down and seemed to be resting as the biggest gobbler just stood there. I have also seen it briefly on other occasions.

have also seen this before must be the reason they get away lol

My big Nebraska Merriams from last year would stop, lay down and fan out while he was laying down.  Had never seen that before.

I have seen this as well. Also have seen birds lay down in some high grass to let me pass. Once in the truck and once I was walking I can see the head popping up like a periscope to see if I was gone.

Me and a buddy from Ohio watched one come to the edge of a green field where I had called from five minutes earlier.  He was slightly elevated above the field, maybe six feet.  He stood there motionless for 15 minutes then just sat down for another thirty looking at the field.

I've seen in in the past as well, but not sitting looking for a hen in a field.
If I'm not back in five minutes, wait longer!

Now that would be cool to see!!!

I've seen quite a few do it around open fields, most of the time under a shade tree on a hot day.
