Hey guys...  So I've been playing round making some box calls - three to be exact.  All about the same dimension, copied from a Lynch.  Made out of 1/4 inch oak, side tapered from full thickness to about 1/16th at the top - sounds very nice when stroked from left to right, but for the life of me I can't get ANY of the three to make a decent sound from right to left...???

The grain looks the same, the lid (which I shaped) is eyeball symetrical...  Any ideas?  If I put the lid on the other direction, then they work right to left, and not left to right....

Sounds like your left rail is working fine. Make sure your rails are equal height.  use some red chalk so you can see where your paddle and rails are hitting. If the paddle and rails are hitting equally the right rail must be dead. Something could be wrong with the wood. You can tune the rail by taking some off the bottom of the rail from the inside. Good luck,

Here is something few may realize but the grain running in the right direction is very important in a glued box call. Look at this drawing
check out the grain running .....
see the difference in the blanks and the way they should be sitting in a box call? Also check this post out, http://oldgobbler.com/Forum/index.php?topic=23589.0
it will help you a lot in orienting your paddle with the box call, as this could be your problem too. pappy

Thanks - I figured grain had something to do with it, I'll pay more attention to this detail on the next one.  The diagram is VERY helpful.
