Fire conditioning

I read something somewhere last year that if you put a flame to your slate call (slate surface only) it very effectively drives out the moisture, and it is then conditioned to easily generate sounds afterwards. Tried it and man it really works! Is this a well-known trick or somthing to be avoided?

How long does it last? Do you have to do it fairly often in humid conditions? How long do you expose it to the flame? Do you use a lighter in the woods or just do this at home?

I only do it at home, and it lasts until the slate absorbs more moisture in a couple of weeks. I keep my calls, ammo & guns inside. Everything stays dry that way.
