I intend to use my Maxus with 28" barrel for Turkey this spring.  Saw a similar thread from a year ago ... Any new thoughts on choke/load recommendations?

Thanks in advance,

Jay

:welcomeOG:  I also have a Maxus 26 inch, I have a Pure Gold Choke and get great patterns wiith Hevi 13 #7s  3.5 2.25 oz . Also good numbers with Hevi 6s.  Kilt two with the 7s last year.

Thanks Runngun.

What size PG choke was that.  Where I hunt, most of my shots are less than 30 yards ... in fact, missed some Turkeys much closer the last several years.  Your thoughts?

If they're that close, shoot lead and most any choke.

Yeah if they are that close I would try the factory modified, but I would still shoot the Hevi 7s. But the lead will kill them just fine. Please just make sure you pettern your gun and see how it does with your choice of choke and load at hunting distances. Get a big piece of paper and shoot away. You will be just fine. Another load I like is the Federal Heavyweights with the factory chokes.

I shoot my Maxus with a Hevi-Shot choke and Hevi-Shot #6's. Killed one a couple years back with just a factory full and some Federal #5's.

Polish that barrel and you should be able to achieve patterns in excess of 220-230 at 40 yds with hevi 13 3.5"  2.25 ounce 6s.

You may be able to achieve decent patterns with the federal heavyweight since the browning is overbored but that flight control choke is a finicky beast.

Goodluck!

Thanks to all ... I appreciate the input.  I will pattern my gun with factory chokes and several different loads to see where I'm at.

I just bought a Maxus with 26 inch barrel and tried the Browning Full Strut choke.  Not very good.

I also tried a Hevi13 choke with Hevi #6's in 3.5 inch and got great results.  Averaged 240 with that combo.  I probably wont try any other combos since I am very pleased with those numbers and with the evenness of the pattern.

I also tried the Magblends with  3 and 3.5 inch shells and the patterns were good but not as good as the straight 6's.  I think the 3 inch shell averaged 170's and the 3.5 magblends averaged 190's.
