Summer vacation?

My wife and I are planning a road trip to CO this summer. We would like to hit the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and Mesa Verde. We would like to go in July. Are biggest questions are where would you stay or would you camp? We are not big campers but could do it. We fear that it may be hot and hard to relax and sleep at night. We are also wondering what else to do while in that part of CO? We are looking at 2 days driving out and then spending 4-5 days there before spending 2 days to drive home.
