The following is a post I made earlier today on the GON forum.  Thought some of you may be interested; it's a very good book.

*********************************************************

Well this probably will not qualify as a book review since I have not quite yet finished reading the book. Since I read slow ...lol, I thought I would mention it now in case any of you are interested in reading this before opening day.

The name of this book is "Native Turkeys and a Georgia Mountain Turkey Hunter" by Herb McClure.

Native Turkeys was a name old-timers gave to the original pure strain of wild turkeys prior to birds being restocked. Herb discusses them and how they differ from today's turkeys. He recounts many stories of his turkey hunts in this book. He discusses what it was like trying to hunt turkeys back in the days when little information was available on the wild turkey and how the hunters that did hunt them were reluctant to share any information.

Herb has hunted turkeys for almost 60 years during which he did with a severe hearing impairment. Herb is known throughout North Georgia for his ability and skill as a deer, turkey and grouse hunter. I have known him since the early 80's, while I was still in high school. I would go to sporting goods store where he worked just to talk and try to learn what I could about deer and turkeys. I remember back then everyone knew Herb and people were always waiting to talk to him. Back then I was always trying to learn everything I could when talking to him; just like most every hunter who visited the store. Today, I still learn from him and enjoy very much talking hunting with him.

If you don't know Herb, you may know or at least heard of a very close hunting companion/friend of his – Arthur Truelove. Arthur and Herb hunted together back in the 50's and 60's and Herb talks a lot about Arthur and their hunts in this book. I see many people make references of Arthur on this forum; so many of you may be interested in the book for that reason only. Herb mentions many old timers in this book and the stories he tells are very enjoyable. You will learn a lot about Herb, Arthur, and many others in this book.

Not meaning for this post to sound like an infomercial, I will just say the book so far has been a joy to read. I believe most turkey hunters on this forum, whether or not you knew Herb or Arthur, will find this book a very enjoyable read.

BTW.... my mother, who does not hunt but reads a LOT faster than me, really enjoyed the book as well.

Herb also has a DVD, that I believe he made back around 2005. It's been a while since I saw the dvd but my parents recently watched it and enjoyed it very much.

The book is $24.95 and dvd is $12.50 (tax and shipping included in the price). Anyone interested in the book can send a check/money order to Herb at the following address:
