Youth shotgun stock question

I am planning on buying either a Remington 870 or mossberg 500 youth 20ga for my boys. I want to put an ar style adjustable stock on whatever I get. I've read that the receivers are different widths so a 12ga stock may not fit on a 20ga gun.

Also I assume the receivers are the same between a full size 20ga and a youth model?

Thanks guys.

First of all, welcome to OG. We're glad you're here and look forward to getting to know you better. This is a very good site with lots of helpful people and I know you'll enjoy it here.

I would recommend that you visit at http://www.atigunstocks.com and take a look at what they have to offer for either of those guns. I have several of the AKITA adjustable hunting stocks and also their tactical stocks on both 12 gauge and 20 gauge Remington and Mossberg shotguns.

I especially like the AKITA models. They are a more traditional looking stock but are fully adjustable for length of pull from 12 3/8" to 14 3/8" and also have an adjustable comb. They also have a great recoil pad.

Youth and standard 20 gauge receivers are the same.

Thanks,
Clark

Clark,

Thanks for the welcome and reply. I've only got a couple seasons under my belt so I've got a long ways to go for turkey knowledge. This site looks like a good place to get some info from.

I had actually sent ATI an email over the weekend and got a reply this afternoon. They said they didn't offer 20ga stocks but should early next year. This kinda confuses me considering what you said lol. Also I noticed an ATI stock in the classifieds for a 20ga. Maybe they didn't understand my question?

You're welcome. No, I'm sure you framed it correctly and that they understood it. ATI is a company driven by perfection in all aspects of their operation. The stocks designed for Mossberg guns fit both 12 gauge and 20 gauge guns. They have never been satisfied with the adaptors that they use for those stocks for Remington, Winchester and other 20 gauge shotguns. Those adapters had a "proud fit" and they just did not like the way they looked, despite the fact that they worked very well. I have them on 2 Remington 29 gauge 870s for example.

They are in the process of developing a new adaptor that fits exactly flush with the receiver. I have a couple of those that they've already made for the 12 gauge guns and they do look better than the others.

That's the reason for the reply that you were sent.

So, if you need one for a 20 gauge Mossberg, you're set. If you want one for a 20 gauge Remington, you may need to wait for the new adaptor.

I really like the AKITA adjustable hunting stocks. They just help so much with recoil and since they have an adjustable LOP, they can be used by shooters of many different sizes, or grow with a young person.

Please let me know if I can be of help.

Thanks,
Clark

Looks like my last post was lost in the crash. Anyway I'm may end up getting my boys a mossberg maverick 88 for Christmas. I've read it's a good gun for the money and my oldest (9yo) has held one and liked it weight and fit wise.

That should work but whatever you choose, I'm sure your son will be thrilled. Best of luck to you all.
