Lathe Question

Today while turning a pot call my chisel got caught in the chuck. The whole thing blew up and now my lathe has a wobble to it. I took the chuck off and put another one on and it still wobbles. Do you guys think I bent my spindle? Is there anything else I could have bent to make it wobble? If it is the spindle is there anything else I need to get to replace it?

You may need to contact the lathe company and see if it is fixable? Your lucky that it didn't send that chisel back into to you. It could be possible that you spun a barring that the spindle runs through?

put one of your head stocks in, and one of your tail stocks. move them together as close as you can. rotate the lathe by hand watch the points to see if and how much something has moved.don't forget to check where the motor is mounted it may have moved.

Depending how old the lathe is ,,the bearings my of been worn and the jolt was enough to throw the out

More than likely it is a bent spindle. Depending on if it is a direct drive or a belt drive would dictate my action if it was me. Direct would get parted out and sold. Belt driven is a pretty easy fix if you can find the parts or you have a really good machinist. If you end up taking the head stock apart order new bearings for it, with the new spindle. You'll have them out and it would be silly to save a few bucks and not replace them. If yours was equipped with an indexing feature that might be damaged now would be the time to fix that also.

I developed a wobble with my first Delta. I took it to Woodcraft and told them that I thought it was caused by the same thing that you did. They kinda acted like it would be very hard to bend the spindle by sticking a tool in the chuck. I don't know. That is where I would start though.

They put it on the truck when they got their next order of new ones in and traded me one of them. Fixed the problem. Didn't even buy it from there.
