"He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake" (Psalm 23:3b).

Life is filled with all sorts of roadblocks, detours, dead ends, drop offs, and serious dangers.  Too often we study these things and wonder if the Lord really has our welfare at heart.  Somehow we think our life should be smooth sailing, as if heaven should be on earth.

Like shooting a gun or kicking a soccer ball, we usually hit what we're focused on.  If we aren't focused on the target, we'll generally miss it.  If we walk and focus on wrong things, we'll end up lost.

In the 6th petition of the Lord's Prayer ("And lead us not into temptation"), Luther explains, "We pray in this petition that God would guard and keep us so that the devil, the world, and our sinful nature may not deceive us or mislead us into false belief, despair, and other great shame and vice."

Whenever the Christian is tempted, God guards us and leads us on His path of righteousness.  This is why we need to keep our focus on His 10 Commandments and the Gospel (the Good News of what Jesus has done for us on Calvary's cross).  His Word (the Bible) will never lead us away from Him and it gives us the strength to walk on.

Until we breathe our last in this life, there will always be dangerous and deadly obstacles -in front, to the side, and behind us.   But through Jesus Christ, our Shepherd, we can stay on the path that leads to eternal life.
