Took a buddy of mine today, to his lease in simpson county. He has never turkey hunted more less killed a turkey so I told him that I would love to take him and try to get him(and also, in hopes that he may let me come back !!!)
Well we got to a spot, somewhat centralized on the property and begin to listen. 630 rolls around and there was not a peep from anything. 645, I hooted, nothing, hooted nothin, so I was starting to worry. Finally, I just made one long hoot and the gobbler let lose and that was the first of many. We started down a road towards the bird and the bird gobbled about every 30 seconds. The wind was blowing hard so it was kinda difficult to pinpoint him.We set up in a small opening where the loggers were loading trucks a few years back and when I made my first soft clucks on my Morgan Slate, he double gobbled and was only 75 yards, still in the tree. I got a little louder with my clucks and he just gobbled and gobbled and gobbled. He started a gobble and about half way through, he pitched down, into the woods about 100 yards out. He gobbled and strutted but was hung up on a row of piled trees. Finally after 30 min, he gobbled and I could tell he had closed the distance a little bit, coming out of the bottom, and was 100 yards further to the right. I told my buddy to get ready, he is coming now and I did not even finish the sentence hardly and I seen his bright blue head poke over a log. The bird must have been sprinting when he gobbled the last time and never stopped because it was literally seconds later, he killed the bird. We could see just enough of the bird for him to shoot over a log and he sent the HEVI #6's from the NWTF Browing 12 gauge and left his mark from 30 yards. Bird had a 10" beard, 7/8"spurs and weighed 21 lbs.Sorry for the video, all I had was my i phone.

I love these HEVI #6's

A buddy of mine has some land around his house in hinds county and he has always told me about the turkeys that they see during deer season. He wanted me to take him and his 12 year old son who has never been turkey hunting. Well we got to a spot on the edge of a big field at about 630 and one finally sounded off at about 645.We ended up hearing about 5 or 6 birds but all of them was a long ways so we started making our way further down the road. I got some hens fired up and ended up calling one of them up that didnt like my decoy at all. It was a good experience cause the kid got to hear almost every sound a hen can make. She finally left and we were making our way down the road and got to a small food plot with some big woods on one side of the road and pines on the other. I hit the crow call and he let loose only about 100 yards out. I stuck the decoy out and we backed up about 25 yards. The only call I could get him to answer was my primos lil heartbreaker. The bird come through the pines behind us and spooked but as he was leaving I yelped and he gobbled and went into strut. He got on the road and followed the road all the way to us and Matthew let him have it at 27 steps. Matthew thought he was only shooting a 20 gauge until he pulled the trigger and he fell flat on his back and the gun landed beside him but of course he didnt feel a thing. Bird had about a 4.5-5" beard and about .5" spurs. If I dont kill another bird all year I will not complain cause that boy had the time of his life and we will never forget it.
