My cousin has a Mossberg 500 12 guage and uses it for turkey hunting, he was wondering woudl it harm his barrel if he shot rifled slugs through his turkey barrel for deer? Thanks

Not as long as he didn't use his super-full turkey choke.  While the fosters-type rifled slugs are very under bore size, I still wouldn't want to risk shoving it through a very tight turkey choke at around 1500 fps.  Modified or improved cylinder works best with rifled slugs.  For sabots he might want to look for a rifled screw in choke, designed for slugs.  I know Mossberg makes purpose-built slug barrels that can be had pretty cheap and you can find used ones on the net super cheap.

It's not a problem at all but most slugs cause a good bit of lead buildup in the bore. I recommend a "deep clean" first and then when he's through, another deep clean. I usually see a good bit of lead in the forcing cone area and then for another 4" just beyond. A clean and slick bore before he shoots will help somewhat.

Some of my guns shoot better after one "fouling shot" has been fired and then I see some deterioration after 4-5 shots.

I use a Briley rifled choke in my SBE and Nova and it does a great job with 2.75" Brenneke K.O. slugs out to 80 yards.

I hope that helps.

Thanks,
Clark
