Well Water Filtration For Sediment And Iron

My father's house is on a well.  For many, many years it produced very good tasting cold, clean water.  There has always been a slightly high iron content.  Recently, after droughts, more local irrigation, and more well drilling, the water has sediment in it and perhaps more iron as well.  No one will ever know exactly why.

A filtration system is needed, and we'd like to get it right the first time.  There are whole house filter systems and depth filters.

Anyone have experience with them and know the best ones to buy?

my uncle has a system he made.  Take a horse trough and fil it 3/4 with play sand.  have a overflow preventer like the bulb stop in a toilette and let the incoming water fill that tank.  Remember to leave space above the sand for just water so the bulb will shut off the incoming water when the trough is full.  Out of the bottom of one end, connect a pipe running to another trough, sitting lower than the first.  Do not put sand in this one.  make sure to use another overflow preventing device.  This trough will serve as a holding tank from which you can draw the water through your carbon filter pumping system.  The well water in that house went from ok to great after he did this.  After time you will need to replace the sand.  He has added more troughs as holding tanks to allow more water to be stored until needed (so you will have more shower time and laundry time).  This is a cheap but very effective system for removing the iron from well water.
