See if he has fangs.I've killed a few cottonmouths long and skinny that looked more like a water snake,but had fangs,   can't  see the head !

From the pic it's hard to tell but my first guess would be cottonmouth. How did the snake react when cornered and caught?

Most cottonmouths are aggressive, much more so than most snakes.

How big was the head, what was it shaped like? Was it wider than the first 3rd of it's body?

Even though I said cottonmouth, I'm probably wrong........ most likely you would have been able to tell for yourself from it's actions and you would have shown us a pic of a dead snake instead.

Well I cant say for sure what kind it was       but I think for sure its a DEAD one now .

Looks like a Copperheadedrattlemocasin to me.  He'd look much better with no head.


Can't see his head very well, but his short stocky figure is similar to a cotton mouth.  Seems too fat to be a chicken snake or a water snake.

Not sure on the type of snake that is because I haven't seen the reddish marking like that. It's fairly easy to tell if it's a poisonous snake though. There are two ways. Look at the pupils of the eyes. If they are elliptical like a cat, it's a poisonous snake. If they are round it is nonpoisonous. Another way to tell is to look at the scales on his belly from his anus to the tip of the tail. If there are single scales from side to side the snake is poisonous. If there are two scales scales for each row that join in the middle it's a nonpoisonous snake. It's your choice but I suggest you do this after the snake is dead. Just remember that a snake's head can still bite you even after it's cut from the body.
