How close to try and get to a tom on the limb

For me it would all depend on how much time I had.  If I have all day, then I'm not near as concerned about getting close to the roost, in fact I'd rather give myself some wiggle room to maneuver once I figure out what direction they want to head.   If I only have a couple hours I'll push the issue and get somewhere around 75 yards or so depending on the available cover.    But if I had my rathers I'd prefer to have more cushion on the time and distance from the roost.   I have a lot less go wrong when I don't  have to force the issue.    It's easier for me to let him do what he wants to do and take advantage of that, than it is for me to try to convince him to do something he had no intention of doing.
If I'm not back in five minutes, wait longer!

As close as I can get without busting him off the limb.
