Hello,

I would appreciate some recommendations for what folks find to be the easiest mouth call to cluck with. I currently use mostly wood haven in a variety of cuts, and I can make serviceable Clucks, but the best way I can describe my problem is sometimes making this particular sound takes more air effort than what I'm wanting. I can cut or yelp easier than I can get a nice cluck.

I'm open to any brand, cut or style, but ultimately I'd like to be able to make a cluck with about the same amount of effort I use to soft yelp or tree yelp.

I understand different calls for different folks- so I'm just looking for ideas to try

Thanks in advance!!

To preface, everybody's calling mechanics and experience in using mouth calls varies enough that stating that one call or another is best for something is just going to be speculation.  Having said that, I would generally advise that calls made of thinner reed material, regardless of the call design, are going to be easier to make those soft calls with.

Unfortunately, the choices of calls for accomplishing what you want are pretty much endless.  Often, it just takes trying a bunch of different call designs to find out what works best for any one individual.

As for a specific call design that you might want to start with, I would suggest possibly trying a double reed, center V-cut or combo cut, with both made out of .003 material (maybe .004 as the primary (top) reed) or thinner.  Those call designs seem to fit most less-experienced users who are searching for answers. May be what you need,...but then again, maybe not.   :icon_thumright:

Whoever said you can't kill em from the couch never was good enough to call a gobbler into the living room

Buy and try, only way to figure it out.

Really learned that once I became friends with a guy who makes mouth calls commercially, he makes 20-30k a year plus his own and a few friends.

Interesting to get to play with so many combos and see what works!

I find the stretch most important, commercial calls are generally too tight for my liking!

I can use a variety of cuts.

I was going to mention stretch as well. Woodhaven seems to be a bit on the taught side for me. Tom Teasers seem more relaxed and fit my calling style well. They take less air pressure to get a quality sound at least for me anyways.

Pretty much.   Yep.

Find a call that suits you over its entire range.  You can cluck on ANY mouth call.  It's just that YOU gotta decide what you want every OTHER noise (yelp, cutt, purr, etc) to sound like.

I run a couple different 3-reed Gooserbat calls that are more for cutting and dawg raspiness.  They cluck just fine for me, so............   Win, win !!!

The good Lord ain't made a gobbler I can't kill.  I just gotta be there at the right time.....  on the day he wants to die.

Thanks for the input so far and any to come. I've started looking at the brands and reed thicknesses mentioned

If you think stretch may be a benefit to you, there's a new company named Kluk that offers three tensions for each of their calls (low, medium and high).
They offer all the cuts that the other companies do and have some variations to standard cuts that REALLY enhance sound or ease of use or both.
Check them out. Great company. Great calls and excellent, excellent customer service!

If you are a Woodhaven guy, try the Green Hornet. Gooserbat makes great calls as well. DC calls, Del Crow also makes great calls. Z

Here is what I consider to be an extremely important point with regard to making any type of turkey sounds with a mouth call that it seems to me a lot of folks do not consider and overlook.  That is, any mouth call can be modified to sound differently by adjusting or modifying the cuts in the reeds of the call and/or changing the overall reed-cut/design configuration.

Simply stated, if you do not like the sound of a call you have or are not able to make a particular turkey sound to your liking, you can often achieve that sound by modifying the call by making very minute changes in the reed configuration.  Sometimes that process is as simple as changing the depth of a reed cut, or maybe adding a reed cut.  Other times it may involve converting the call design you have to an entirely different call design.  (Examples would be to modify a center V-cut call into a combo call by removing one of the reed side tabs to create the combo cut, or removing both side tabs to create a batwing cut,...or removing the center tab to create a ghost cut).  There are many simple adjustments that can be made to a mouth call that can result in it turning into just what you are looking for in terms of the various turkey sounds you can make.   :icon_thumright:

This is great info. Thanks to all. I will continue to check out the brands and traits mentioned in these posts. I'll an update as well-
This evening I finally got the nerve to start trimming the tape of a few mount calls. So far the effect has had the single most significant impact of tactic, any cut, any brand or any material. After the first call worked I trimmed various brands and cuts and all were much much easier to run.

I guess it's good to finally get over the "I'm afraid to mess it up" and just give it a try!

Thank you all again.
