HuntResearcher

Hi everyone,

I'm a university researcher doing a study of hunting preferences in Northern California. If you hunted fall turkey on the Sacramento or Feather River or elsewhere in the Sacramento Valley in 2019, you may have run into my interview crew at refuges and wildlife areas.

Unfortunately, we were unable to continue our sampling through spring turkey in 2020 due to COVID, and that means that our sample now includes plenty of duck hunters but not enough turkey and deer hunters.

We're doing an online survey as a follow-up that covers hunter preferences for, and satisfaction with, habitat quality, land management, hunt regulations, and other issues affecting hunting in CA. We expect to share the results with CDFW and USFWS when our research is published. The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and we keep your data absolutely confidential.

If you're interested, here are two links. Each one has an explanatory page about the survey, and I'm also happy to answer more questions on this thread if you have them.

We pay a $20 incentive for survey completion, but you'll need to send us your name and address so we can mail you the payment. (All personal info is kept confidential.) To sign up for that one, click here:

If you don't care about the 20 bucks and prefer to remain completely anonymous, you can click this one to go directly to the survey questions:

Thanks a million for your help, and again, I'm happy to answer any questions about the survey, or how we'll use the data, below. We'll keep the survey open for 1-2 more weeks before we have to close it and start analyzing the data.

Oh, I should have mentioned--eligibility for the survey is limited to people who meet these characteristics:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • have hunted deer, waterfowl, or upland gamebirds on public lands in N. Calif in the last 2 seasons

We define northern California as Fresno and north.

Yep, looks legit! ::)

LOL, I get a response like this on just about every hunting forum I go to. Maybe the 20 bucks makes people suspicious...but it's actually standard practice in survey research to offer incentive payments. If you don't want it, you don't have to take it; you can remain totally anonymous by following the other link.

This is a legit university research survey and I'm happy to explain more if you have questions. Or you can just Google my website so you don't have to click the link. Google "Matzek hunt research" and you'll come up with more info about the study than you could ever want.

I would suggest that contact information such as a phone number be provided so that those that are skeptical about this can verify that it is not a phishing scam of some sort.... :icon_thumright:

If it is not, then I am glad to see you doing your research...  :)

I'd give my phone number if I still had an office! But the university is closed until midsummer.

My email is vmatzek@scu.edu and you can check me out with Google on the Santa Clara University webpage.

Last chance for the survey input (and the $20). I need to process payments by Friday ahead of the end of the fiscal year. If you are planning to do the survey and collect the twenty bucks, please do so right away to ensure payment.

thanks

Just putting this back up to the top. This survey is legit. You can look it up on line. It's being paid for through a grant and is being conducted by the Santa Clara University, Environmental Studies and Sciences Dept. Virginia Matzek at vmatzek@scu.edu . Anyway I just received my $20.00 in the mail today.

even if it's legit, your still giving out your personal hunting spots and info to who knows how many people

20 bucks isn't worth the gas money for any extra people in places I hunt

That's not really true if you take time to look at the survey.

Took this survey and no specific information as to hunt locale was required, it was more generalized, if I remember correctly I listed the county I hunted.
