I was wondering how to get started in ametuer turkey calling contests. I was trying to look online for info but can't seem to find much on any around anywhere. I would like to go to a couple to just watch then try to start participating. I was also wondering how the contests themselves work, like number of different calls you must use or how the scoring system works or just any of the basics about it. I was just wondering if anybody had any knowledge/advice about it for me.

You can go to the NWTF.org website and look up calling contests in your state. Most of the contests are usually close to turkey season around Jan-March. I'm pretty sure they also have rules for the contests but there are 5 calls that are drawn at random. There are 5-7 judges that are situated so they can not see the contestants. A moderator will ask the contestant to perform their best call for example flydown cackle or cluck and purr, or kee kee run, etc.... The judges score from 0-20. The high and low scoring judges are thrown out and the rest is added up and thats your score. I hope all this makes sense. Good luck,

you can also go to http://www.dedduck.com/forum/Forum-ded-turkey-forums to look, that is about the only competition calling site that i know of, Steve is always tring to list upcoming calling competitions in all areas, there are also a lot of the comp callers that are on the site, if someone knows of another site, let us know, the NWTF does a fair job of putting the comps on the state links, DED is working with the new NWTF calling organizer to try to get some updated stuff going also, the rules are located on the NWTF site also
It's not a passion, It's an OBSESSION
