HUGE Tom Kelly fan here, I have all of his books and all signed by the Colonel. Did you know that they've got a new promotion going on? They've got Tenth Legion window decals for your truck... FREE. All you have to do is buy the new book when it comes out this fall.

I've written to them asking for help with your quote. Probably the most quoted line from the Col. is "I don't hunt turkeys because I want to, I hunt them because I have to." Another one is "Fall turkey hunting is manuevers, spring turkey hunting is war."

If you're going to buy just one of the Colonel's books I suggest that you buy TWO. "Tenth Legion" and "Better on a Rising Tide." Rising is my favorite; I've got a daughter much like his ("the Colonel's daughter") and, ironically, my daughter just had twins, just like his did. Our twin grandchildren are identical boys while his grandkids are a boy & a girl.

Asked for help on the quote from his website... here's the reply (they don't mention your quote):

"I've been called the poet laureate of the functionally illiterate."

"You don't hunt turkeys because you want to, you hunt turkeys because you have to."

This line was spoken while we were making Turkey Tales 1.  The original line is from page 11 of Tenth Legion 40th Anniversary Edition, which correctly says,  " I do not hunt turkeys because I want to; I hunt them because I have to."

Jason at my office here in Lakeland changed it again for the 2000 decals.   His version is "I don't hunt turkeys because I want to, I hunt them because I have to."  As Tom is apt to say,  "pick your choice."

"The bird possesses a remarkable ability to turn arrogance into hopelessness."

"A turkey's brain development exceeds that of nearly all vice-presidents."

I have them all and used to give signed books as gifts back when Tom would sign them at the bookstore in Spanish Fort where you could order them (before David started his online stuff).

One time I just said "write whatever you want to"

he signed it:"Dear Mike-for those endless nights in each other's arms.Tom"

Classic.  Good story.

I had to run the DVD back several times to catch the one in my signature line below....

Here's your quote, got it straight from the Colonel himself. It's in the book, "Take Back In Fancy," the chapter entitled "I'll Never Go There Anymore," and on the last page (page 111):

"I did it because I loved my country, but you can bet your a.. I'll never love another GD Country."

He wrote in 1 he considered the story about his daughters wedding his best.Personally the story about he and his daughter making the flutter mill diamond mine his best.Where he says he'll never go back there to preserve the memory I get teary reading it thinking of my son.

In the book where Jim Casada and Jim Spencer compiled their favorite Tom Kelly stories, Jim signed it "This is all bull$hit" and Tom wrote next to it "He is right".
"I do not hunt turkeys because I want to, I hunt them because I have to. I would really rather not do it, but I am helpless in the grip of my compulsion" Tom Kelly, The Tenth Legion, 1973

These 2 stories are out of the book, "Better on a Rising Tide," (my favorite). The wedding is in the story, "The Turning," and the flutter mill is in "Forty Crook Branch." Like you, these 2 just tear (as in paper AND is in cry) me up, my daughter is a turkey killing machine and, as mentioned above, I can't help but to think of her when I read about the Colonel's daughter.

My favorite is in Tenth Legion in the chapter people where Tom Draws the comparison between a Deer Hunter and a member of the Legion.
I re-read most of that book every year just before the season it's become a personal ritual.

Hart has spent more time with the Colonel than me, but I guarantee yall, if you haven't met and talked with Tom Kelly for a while , you have missed out. He is an American treasure for sure.

My personal favorites are of course Tenth Legion, The Season and Dealer's Choice.

I have most of his books, and a neat turkey call he gave me when I went to see him in Spanish Fort many years ago.. when he passes on, we will lose a damn fine man, soldier, author and of course turkey hunter.

I have read Tenth Legion every February since 1979.. to loosely quote " Welcome to the Tenth Legion , we are pleased to have you"
