Rookie Mistake!

I have to admit. I am starting to get frustrated. The turkeys in my area are making a turkey out of me. I have been very close, but not close enough yet.

I took my son out yesterday and decided to set up the blind. He is six and sitting still is not his strongest quality. We sat for most of the morning with no luck. Then heard some far off gobbling in the afternoon. I decided to go for the hail mary pass. We headed out in the direction of the gobbling. Once we got within 200 yards we took a seat. We sat with no gobbling for about 10 minutes. Then I messed up. I called softly and heard gobbling about 300 yards away. I thought it was over. We stood up to head in the direction of the gobbling, walked about 50 yards and yes!!! Putt putt putt. :(

There he was!! Two different gobblers!! Stupid Mistake!! One silver lining. My son sat still perfectly!

I wouldn't say thats a rookie mistake...it happens, it has happened to me also and I"ll admit...more that once. I have sat for hours and heard nothing and make a move and puff.  They love to do that sneaky thing on ya!
I hope you and your son had a great time together..

WE live and learn don't we ? That what keeps me coming back, I always seem to get schooled a bit more. Keep at it.

Don't be too hard on yourself.  That happens to everybody.
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands, love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper; his hands remember the rifle.

If you've hunted turkeys long enough it will happen to you. Hope you and your son are successful this year!
If I had a dollar for every gobbler I thought I fooled I'd be well off!

Don't sweat it. I have done that several times. It could be that the gobbler you heard was the one responding at 300 yards and the toms you spooked never gobbled?

Just part of turkey hunting. Another thing that has happened to me a lot is to be covering ground calling trying to get a gobble and then come back out the same way only to bump gobblers that had came in to where I had been.

I can't count how many times this has happened to me!  I feel your pain, like everyone says, put it behind you and hunt hard.  Little things like that always make me wanna keep after 'em.
