I was reading a post and got to thinking. Something I always say is we don't know what we don't know.
For instance I've seen some pretty rough calls with someone saying it's the best they've ever run. Very subjective no?
Go to a reg hunt forum. Post a best Call question. You're, I'm sure, aware the ones listed as the best are ,imo at least , no where near even the middle.
For starters the person never qualifies us as to how many he's run. Could be all 2 of them.
Vests, guns, decoys, blinds etc are exactly the same. The eye of the beholder may be truthful but not wide open.
Just something to think about.

I agree most topics on forums are subjective and opinions. That being said it is nice to read user reviews on calls. Like you pointed out you never know someone's experience. That's why a large forum is nice because you usually get several reviews and can find an emerging pattern of the better choice(s). Alot of times people make the mistake of associating price with quality or name chasing. Theres actually market research behind people buying more expensive products because it's perceived better due to price. Honestly there are great call makers with pots in the $30-50 range that are every bit as good as the $100+ club. To each their own, value is in the eye of the beholder. I don't own any pots that were over $100.00, but also won't say I never will. But I did buy a MM2 which was much less.

If it works for you, it's a good call. I rely 100% on luck, lol  :turkey2:

I have to agree with you. im a picky son of a gun when it comes to calls, I don't trust anyones opinion but my own.

I agree with this. Everyone plays a call slightly different and has their idea of what they want to hear in their mind. I have some calls that I know are good enough to hunt but just don't leave an impression on me. And the ones that do are not guaranteed to do the same to you. So anymore I just try to keep my mouth shut and hunt the ones I want to.

Guess you really can't trust reviews. If so a 5 dollar clearance call may be "the best ever". Google the primos bamboozle, guarantee someone loves it. It'll work. I'm not knocking it but there's surely some out in front.
Here's how I do it and I bet others are the same.
Forget non turkey sites. Ask a question regarding Calls. You'll get some crazy answers.
There's some good guys there but not the vast knowledge that's here. There are certain guys here that seem to run the same type call I do. They tend to like the same things too.
When they start jumping in I listen up.
How many times is a call all the rage? I can name a few. I call em bandwagon calls. Within months they're all for sale.
There's a reason for that too. They don't stand up next to other calls in the users ear.
All the more experienced folks know this. It's more to help the newer folks btw.
This is a great forum and the reviews here are way better than elsewhere just keep your brain on when you read any so to speak.

Best is somewhat subjective but mostly objective.

Diaphragm calls................ Some what subjective in that some are built to high standards of quality and tolerances.  Some are majorly mass produced and are not of the same quality.  But even the best quality diaphragm goes into a unique mouth with a unique palate and tongue.  What , even the most experienced mouth callers can get out of it, will vary from one to the other.

Pot calls............... Pretty subjective.  They are either built to sound good or they are not.  Price point is not much of a determining factor, as others have said.  The objectivity of it comes from the striker combination and from the operator's skill.  Also, what sounds good to Fred might not catch Joe's ear.

Box calls............. Same deal.  What one guy likes, the next may not.  A junk call is a junk call.  I have $15 boxes that I, personally, would hunt over $100-$200 boxes because............to me.......they sound better.

Perception is reality.

Especially on the sales floor.

I spent a good many years on the pro-staff of a call manufacturer.  Doesn't matter if turkeys liked the way a call sounds.  Spent countless weekends standing around a booth calling in turkey hunters.

I try and quantify my opinion in responses. Like the best call to me that will cost X, or from the ones I've run I like blah blah, in calls that you can get with little to no wait are..

When new guys ask for a call opinion I'm not going to direct them to a 2 year wait list and a $300 price tag. I'm going to give a call maker that has a website, and little to no wait time and reasonable prices
