Advice on 20 gauge youth gun

I'm looking for advise on what to use for a choke and load for a remington 11-87 20 gauge youth gun. I have limited experience with using guns since I've always used a bow for turkey.  I purchased this gun for my sons. Picked it up wed and saturday my 8yr old got his first turkey, and a good one at that. I had a regular rem full choke and used reg win turkey loads #5. The shot was close 13 yards and the bird was dead before he hit the ground. My question is should I just stick with this set up? I felt after patterning it at 20 it was ok but I wouldn't want much past 20. I don't plan on having them shoot that much past 20 anyway but I know they could handle 30 easily. Looking for kind of a middle of the road turkey choke and load that would be best for them for 10 to 30 yards. I've looked at the SST and heavy-hot and jellyheads but haven't settled on anything or which load to use. What I don't want is a set up that could be too tight for that 20 yard shot.

Thanks. Any advise would be appreciated.

First of all, welcome to OG. We're glad you're here and it's good to hear about your son's hunt.

I have that very same gun and have done a lot of patterning with it and similar barrels that my readers have sent to me. From everything I've seen from those barrels, if you will limit their shots to 30 yards, give or take a few feet, the very best combination I've found is the factory modified choke tube and the Triple Beard turkey loads from Hevi-Shot. They are a lead combo load that has an excellent core pattern and a very good halo pattern. It will allow your son or anyone to cleanly kill a turkey without being too tight in those closer ranges.

Again, glad you're here and hope that helps.

Thanks,
Clark

Keeping the Rem full choke and switching to Fed HW #7's would get you to 30yds I'm sure.

I'm shooting the Colonial Arms .570 from mine.  The Primos Tightwad and the SumToy 562 have also thrown great patterns from my 870 Youth.

I used a SSX .555 with hevi 13 straight 7's for awhile with good success.

Welcome, Hawk32... i use 565 Trulock choke and Federal HW 6 or 7... in my Rem youth 870 with 21 inch barrel....

Thx for the help guys and the welcome.

One more question. How much of a difference is there between chokes that say 565 or 555. I see lots of people posting the sizes. I assume the smaller the number the tighter the pattern?
