Interesting question

Something I've wondered about more n more. How many guys consider deer, wind direction, scent control while deer hunting? Bet not many n actually sounds like a silly question but I bet many guys had good sets get blown up because of deer.
Give you a for instance.
Last spring youth day my daughters n I had 2 long beards coming right to us. Suddenly deer appeared headed straight at us. Got near the set n blew like crazy, running, stopping, blowing, coming just a little back n doing it all over. Bottom line is birds turned n kept moving on. Couldn't get them to reset towards us so essentially they didn't totally blow the birds out but turned em.
Another day I was w Saige. 4 deer to our left at 20 yards watching the blind we were in. God I was hoping they'd just go calmly. Fortunately they left concerned but didn't make a giant ruckus, gobbler came in n she shot it.
Just two examples but this sort of thing has happened many times w deer doing either n affecting the outcome.
Id bet many more Turks would be killed by everyone without the interference.
I personally don't worry bout the deer so it's only a winter time discussion n something to wonder about

I've had it happen but there is not much you can do about it.

Been there and done that...even with wild hogs too!!

Just my personal opinion.  I don't worry with it.   Deer and other animals including turkeys are alerted every day of their life.   It rarely happens to me but if deer happen to bust me while turkey hunting I'll just give it 15-20 minutes and then continue on.  Turkey hunting is a pretty simple process that we sometimes unknowingly  complicate by thinking instead of reacting.
If I'm not back in five minutes, wait longer!

I'm rarely if ever concerned about wind direction while turkey hunting, but when I deer hunt wind direction and hunting the wind means everything.

I don't. I try to work up a good sweat walking in so deer get a pretty good warning ahead of time.  :D

It does happen from time to time but I spent so much time worrying over wind direction and scent control during deer season that I'll be danged if I'm gonna do it in the spring.  That's one of the beauties of turkey season... I can relax and enjoy it.

i'm not going to handicap myself by worrying about it, it does happen a little but most of the time the birds setting in and need nothing more than a you to get in a new set for calling. I've had as many sets blown by calling attracting coyotes and the coyotes busting the birds but i wont stop calling because it might bring in a dog.

In 32 years of doing this and doing it a lot I've only had deer screw it up a couple times.  I don't worry about it.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

Uncle Tom

Many years ago...first time I was going turkey hunting a professor at school my wife worked at told her that I would hunt long time before I would kill a turkey...I had been deer hunting for many years at the time...am getting on up there now...well, I told my wife to tell the professor that "if a turkey can't smell, I will kill him"...killed a jake first light that morning and haven't looked back since. Thank the Lord they can't smell, because if they could we would never kill them. Don't forget they can hear you thinking and see you change your mind LOL.

Soon as I get set-up, I light a good ol' stinky cigar up and smoke it while waiting for first light. It keeps the deer downwind of me away.

I like a Cubao#1 or a Gurka Grand Reserve. For a cheap smoke, I like Phillies Titans.
