I put this bird down yesterday evening. I'm not a good story teller but I will try. I arrived in the woods before daylight and the rest of the day was pretty uneventful until about 6:45 pm. This gobbler came into view strutting in the field about 60 yards away ( I was sitting 40 yards into the woods). I started off with some soft yelps on my scratch box and he would stare into the woods and strut. He stayed in the field for about 15 minutes as I was doing some purrs and clucks. He finally entered the woods (still 60 yards away) strutting some more. He stayed at that distance for another 15 minutes then I hit him with another purr & cluck and he was headed my way.

He was at 30 yards and started acting apprehensive, I figure this was because of my jake decoy. I took aim and sqeezed the trigger, I apparently pulled the shot because feathers flew and he took off running. Luckily he stopped at 53 yards I fired again and dropped him. I thank the good lord he stopped where he did and offered another shot.

18 lbs, 1" spurs & 7.5" beard. Not the dominate bird in the area but a nice 2 year old in a tough season.

Bad picture. I forgot to move the tag to see the other spur. ::)

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

Thanks guys!  This has been a tough season, normally most of the hens are on eggs by now. Judging by the number of hens I saw, they are just starting to breed.

This is my first bird with a scratch box. I guess he couldn't resist the sweet sound of that scratcher!

You won't regret trying them. I'm not 100% sure what kind of wood this one is. Pappy sent it as an extra with another scratcher i ordered. If i had to guess i would say african black wood/ ambrosia maple?

I fired one of those "warning shots" this spring also which was quickly followed up by a successful load of #5s. Congrats!
