Yesterday evening after work I spotted some birds, there had been a bunch of jakes here so I looked through the binoculars and it ended up being 3 toms and a couple hens. I decided to go after them. Well I dropped down below the barn and made a big circle and was able to crawl up to the edge of the hay field. I looked down the field and could see them strutting.  I was watching the show when a bunchof jakes came out and the toms ran them off and continued to head the other way. I crawled back down to the woods behind me and took off running the  way I thought they was heading. I het right below where I wanted to set up and crawled back up to the field. I could see one strutting back up in the hay field and they was heading right where I had just came from haha. So I do the same thing that I had just done except in reverse. So I crawl back up to where I had been just a little while earlier and I see 3 big read heads out in the field. Well the birds are coming right towards me so im watching them and the hens turned and started going the other way so I wait till there heads are down and I raise up. He comes out from behind a clump of tall grass and I shoot. Well I run down there and here lays this jake. I could just see the top of his beard in the tall grass and I guess he had came through right in front of the tom. This is the first jake I have ever killed and even though I got on the wrong bird for the shot it was still a great and exciting hunt. He had a 5 in beard and weighed

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.
