KY Opening Day

Saturday was a great opening day here in Kentucky. Birds were gobbling their head off on the roost since about 5:10. Did a fly down at about 5:50-6:00 and they all gave off one final gobble and then the woods went silent. Gave a few yelps after not hearing a peep for 20 minutes and still nothing. Heard some noise in the leaves at 7:15 and here rushed in 7 birds. Picked out the biggest of the bunch (all young birds) and let the 870 sing. Dropped him at 30 yards like a rock. Not a big bird but after eating tag soup last season I was overjoyed. Didn't hear a single gobble out of them after they hit the ground but they knew where they were heading and came into the decoys running.
Young bird but still considered a tom based off the beard size. 18lbs 6 3/4" beard and 1/2" nub spurs. Now to spend the rest of season going after the big toms!

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.
