This is the time of year most states hunter ed classes start up. I'll be mainly referring to states touching NJ in this post.
I had a few months back applied to be an instructor in NY state, I didn't finish the training since it was impossible w my schedule. Classes at night, multiple days, etc. and my understanding from a students point of view very few classes.
I only say this as NY n I think Pa allow kids to hunt at 12. In Jersey its 10. We do an international course same as most places n it's honored everywhere.

Classes saying full still welcome walk ins.
You need to get a workbook n fill it out completely or do an online thing which I believe is 25 bucks, print out the waver n come to class. You can skip the field section if you choose this method.
All classes are completed in one day, usually by 1 with an 8 o'clock start even when doing multiple disciplines.
If archery is one you must have a bow drawing at least 35 pounds or a crossbow at 75, 5 matched n correct for the bow arrows n you need to shoot 3 out of 5 in a deers vitals. And the equipment is checked that's it's safe to shoot. So don't bring bows that need strings, cracked limbs, missing eclips, etc. firearms are supplied

Being  it can be done in a day and walk ins allowed it may fit more bordering states prospective hunters and the license for youths is free.
We have classes coming up this weekend n next so if you have a youth you can get it done before youth day. If you're in a state that says 12 to hunt ther can start two years early.
If anyone has questions pm me

In West Tenn just before youth deer season my grandson took the hunter ED on line and it took him most of the day to complete all of the study parts and take the test. He pass it on line and had to look on line to complete the field day. After going to his field day location the game wardens call all the kids into a room and handed out the test again for the kids to take, boy you should of seen the look on some kids and dads faces. Some of the kids took a long time to complete the test again, before being able to complete the field day.         Also i think everyone who gets a carry gun permit should also take the hunter Ed program first. All my kids and wife did before i let them get a gun carry permit.. all for safety reason on controlling you gun and shoot don't shoot...etc...

Wow not a good way for kids to meet the COs. Sorry for the kids.

I've been assisting with the hunter education program in Illinois for the past 35+ years. Our semi-annual group of youngsters and some adults numbered over 50 a couple of weeks ago. We'll do it again in August and probably have a similar size group.

I had it easy as a kid. They gave hunters ed in 6th grade during school hours. Everyone took it whether you wanted to hunt or not!  But then again my school district always closed the first week of deer season and the first Monday and Tuesday of small game season!!

Pretty similar to how it was where I went to school as well except that the classes were after school. Just a heads up for PA residents with kids that are under 12, check out the mentored youth program (I am thinking of doing this with my daughters next year)

Hunters ED. was also part of our regular schooling, but it was in the 8th grade. Everybody took it. Field training was also during school hours. Went to a small rural kindergarden thru 8th grade school back then, which has long since been closed and torn down.
