raspy woods for box calls

In general what wood combos give you that old raspy hen...or can the rasp be built into the wood on any combos.

It's up to the owner how much rasp they want the builder to build into the call? Certain wood combos produce a certain sound of rasp, again that's up to the own what sound of rasp they want. Some wood combos produce a sharp chatter, some a softer chatter, some deep throaty rasp, some a higher fast chatter, the combos are endless. Any hard wood over a softer wood will produce rasp. That's why when you order a call from a builder it's important to tell them what your looking for in a call.

Well...i got lots of boxes with rasp...I was wanting to know if any of the woods were easier to achieve this...the best I got is a walnut/cedar by Albert. Or can any combo chosen can sound like a raspy old hen...surely there has to be favorite combos that can achieve this easier

The most rasp I can get out of my half moons is with a bloodwood lid over an eastern red cedar box. As Willow Ridge's description, a hardwood lid over a softwood box.

It's not just the wood combos that produces a certain sound. If you used a canary over walnut combo, and had a couple different styles of calls made from it, like lets say a Cost style and a Turpin style calls. The Cost wouldn't produce that OLD HEN sound as easy as a Turpin styled call would. For a Cost style short box, I like a bloodwood over mahogany or a sassafras over cedar, both produce a lower tone deep rattle rasp of an old hen. For the old hen sound you want a softer tone wood combo that produces a good rattle in the rasp.

I have 5 box calls with Snakewood lids that have different type wood boxes and they are all real raspy.

One from Marlin, two from Albert Paul, one from Ed Terefencko, and a Hen Box from Richard Hudson. My Marlin short box is the raspiest of the bunch.
