I live in the Texas Panhandle and am looking to venture into south central Kansas the second weekend of may this year on a solo hunt to try to get my first Kansas bird. I will be camping in a tent and I will be able to get there Thursday afternoon and leave Sunday afternoon. I was just seeing if any of you guys could give me some pointers for that area which would be unit 5. I appreciate any help and feel free to pm me if you don't want everyone seeing your knowledge. Thanks and good luck to everyone this spring!!!

Get a KS WIHA atlas when they come out. The atlas should tell you all you want to know. Good luck
When I turkey hunt I use a DSD decoy

Is there at least a good population in that area of the state or would it be a waste of my time to make the trip. Again I appreciate any help!

I think the only poor population of birds in KS are in the s.w. I base this on the fact that they have no fall season. Call a biologist in KS and talk to them about the area you want to hunt.

And the SE. Dropped to one bird in the fall from the 4 it was for years. Kansas public gets more crowded every year. I ended up buying land to escape it. Good luck.

If it rains stay on the hard roads.  Not a lot of road base in a lot of the roads and you will not believe how greasy they get.

Thanks for the tip, I will be in a 2wd truck so I'm hoping for pleasant weather.

I've never had a problem gaining permission to hunt turkeys in that unit...... Turkey populations are scattered usually along creek and river Bottoms..... And I will tell you turkeys will travel miles on one day and usually do a big loop to and from roost sites.... Try not to bump them off the roost or they might not come back for days.... So at the courthouse and get you a land ownership book.... Around 50 $ for the book....

So true!
If I had a dollar for every gobbler I thought I fooled I'd be well off!
