I know this decoy gets bashed bc of looks but I am looking for a jake instead of the pretty boy pretty girl combo I have. ..avian and dsd would be idea but money's not there right now so need a cheaper option .... anyone have real experience with a funky chicken or other cheaper ones like sneaky Pete or something?  I know funky chicken looks ridiculous but if it works it works lol just lookin for real experiences

jlewis4390

Or I seen a pretty boy jr for 29.99 would this be a better option to go with my pretty girl

snapper1982

Or one of the hs strut decoys. Sneaky Pete or woody.

jlewis4390

I'm looking to get a jake bc everyone I talk to said they run a jake instead of a full strut Tom like I have and it is like carrying a 5 gallon bucket through the hills so smaller folding decoys seem like a better option to but in vest

Turkeys aren't very smart...more turkeys have been killed over $10 foam decoys than anything else.

Pretty decoys are more for hunters than for turkeys.  I'm guilty of it - I run DSD dekes, but they aren't necessary.

Get what you can afford and get out to the woods.

Or I may just say screw it and use my pretty girl pretty boy combo and quit being a whiner about carrying em until next year when I can afford the avians .....

jlewis4390

So I got 2 new places to turkey hunt ...my current spot is a open farm fields 200 acres my decoys worked wonders on both my birds last year ...my 1st 2 kills ever ....but my 2 new spots are all hills and timber so would you guys get the funky chicken or just get like a avian hen to run and gun and have fit in vest while hunting the hilly timber?

Bingo.

My real world experience with Funky Chicken has been excellent...I, like you, was pretty skeptical but thought I'd give it a shot. Man, was I pleasantly surprised! Had one gobbler beat that poor little fella for something like 4 mins. I couldn't get a shot since the gobbler was obscured. Man, he wouldn't give up!
If you search Funky Chicken I think you'll find my comments from last year. If I recall correctly, three toms came to him and all three were pretty darned aggressive...

I'll save you the trouble of a search:

Funky Chicken got whooped!

Bought a Funky Chicken 'cause I had Cabelas points and my interest was peaked by the whole concept. I've had chickens and domestic turkeys off and on for years and, as anyone who has had them knows, they'll kill any member who is weak. My thought process was, like the inventors, to take advantage of that natural trait. I used it a couple of times but hadn't had birds come to it so I more or less retired it. Well, today I thought I'd give it another shot. To make a long and interesting story short, I called a longbeard in and he proceeded to open a can of whoop a$$   on that little jacked up jake! He knocked the poor little fella down, beat him with his wings and pecked the life out of him! He worked that sorry little fella over for about 4 mins. straight! If you've ever been worked over, four minutes is a LONG time! He finally gave up both the beating and the ghost...I'm lovin' that little jacked up jake right now!

Long beard got funked this morning!
The "chicken" did his dirty work again this a.m.! Taking a few winks after some aggressive calling at flydown...After about 40 mins. of no calling, I opened up with some cackling and yelping...A few minutes of silence then another cackle and yelp sequence...GOBBLE! Just laid still and soon enough a long beard in full strut! He stood for a moment, then still in full strut, he started a fast walk to the decoys. When he arrived he turned to the hen for maybe 4 seconds. Just enough time for me to sit up and aim. He turned back and stared at the "decoy that's to stupid looking to work." He stood eye to eye with the chicken until I figured it best not to risk an eagle swooping down or a farmer showing up or some other such nonsense...I sent him to turkey Valhalla!
I gotta' say...I'm convinced! "Tiny Tim" will be in my vest from here on out...We're best buds now!  :love5:

I picked up two new decoys last night from Walmart for a total of about $30. They had a good selection with a wide price range, but I ended up getting the Mrs. Mom (mature hen) and School Boy (jake) from the Mossy Oak Turkey Thugs line.

I haven't used them in the field yet, but I set them up in the backyard this morning and I'm pretty impressed with the quality, especially considering the price. The School Boy looks pretty good and even has a realistic beard. I'm excited to bring them out next weekend!

Anyone ever tried just hunting him alone ? I will be in the hilly timber and no open fields just power lines here and there
