Okay here it is. My buddy and I went out this morning it was cold again and dizzling out. Hit the lake side public land where I always hear gobbles no matter what time of year it is, Nothing. So we picked up and took off up the mountain more by this time it was about 7:30 am. Arrived about 15 mins later to the spot and set up about 8:00. Stay there till about 9 with out a peep from anything except the crows. So we were on our way out to eat a quick snack at the truck, when GOBBLE OBBLE OBBLE. So we decided to dump in to a gully that we thought the gobble came from. He gobble two or three more times while we were walking around trying to pin point his exact location. But it that we would get closer but only to hear him gobble again in an other direction. we circled the area about three time and called it quits since my buddy needed to get back for church.

Now my thought and questions are....

1. could the bird been on another ridge ?
Or could he have been flanking us?Or was this turkey a master in evading us? HELP?

Hard to say without knowing the lay of the land. But here anotherr point you might not have thougt about...... I no it's rare but I have seen a bird still on roost at 9 in the morning so if he was he could be turning on the limb casting sound in different directions. Go back after him asap

Without seeing an aerial it's hard to say. I'm taking you didn't have any satelite pics of your area? Sound is weird sometimes to figure out how far away he was, and exactly where. I had one on a plateau one time that was a piece of flat ground about 40 yards square sitting on a steep hill. He'd wander back and forth gobbling in different directions, which thru the sound all wacko to anyone listening. I finally figured out where he had to be, but got busted before I could get close enough for a shot. If you pull up a satelite image of where you were, see if there is a strut zone in the area similar to what I'm talking about.

Jay After I posted this I look at my aerial maps and I think he was on a ridge that has a house on it or close to it. So when we were down in the gully in the thick timber with a slight breeze, I bet we never heard him cause of that. And I was up by that house yesterday and I found a roost up there.

Trevor I have seen them up in my area in the roost on really cold days. That also could be possible. I did think of that till you mentioned it. Thanks guys I wont be able to get back out there till wen. and thur. I hope I can kill this bird. I want him bad now lol.
