Sighting in a red dot question

Hey guys, for those of you who use a red dot sight, how do you sight it in? I've sighted in rifles and slug guns for years but don't have much experience sighting in for "shot".  What I've done is aimed at a point I have marked, shoot, then move the dot to the most dense, uniform part of the pattern.  Is this the correct way to do this?

Also, and I know this is the wrong way, but before because my Nitros are so pricey I would sight in with Winchester supreme and assume the sights would be pretty close for my Nitros. I understand this is wrong and when I do it this year I will use the Nitros for the whole process. If I have to buy more I will. I'd rather have it done correctly.

Thanks guys!

Start off up close (20 yds).  Use dove loads at first to sight in. Then switch over to your hunting loads to fine tune. Once your on at 20 back up to 40 and shoot to double check.

I agree. I use a Bushnell trs-25 and I sighted in at 20 yds with a light dove load, then fired one of my turkey loads at 20, and then thirty and forty. You could skip the thirty if your shells are expensive and just check your forty. One thing I've noticed using a reddot is make sure while your aiming that the gun is straight up and down or your shot could go left or right of point of aim and cause alot of frustration while trying to sight in. After first mounting my red dot I decided to sight in starting at forty and when I attempted a 20yd shot my shot was left . Couldn't figure out what was wrong until I started paying attention to detail and realized I would rush the 20 yd shot and my gun wasn't level while aiming. It's a careless mistake that will waste alot of ammo and money if your not careful. Just a lil heads up!  Lesson learned for me and I always start at 20 and work my way back from there. I believe there is a sight in procedure posted in the sights and optics section that will break it down in more detail for you. Hope this helps.

Laser bore sight...usually nails the horizontal...

Set red dot a bit over laser dot and test with a shot....

Adjust as needed...I'm usually fairly well dialed in within 4-5 shots....

Your method will work, start at 15 imho!

I normally draw a dot and start at 10 yards with dove loads. Zero it in then switch to a turkey load and try 20. I use Nitros so I actually use dove loads then some other turkey load then the Nitros last at 40.

For me, I start at 12.5 yards with dove loads which allows for exactly 1/8 inch windage and elevation adjustments (1 click = 1 inch at 100 yards) per Bushnell manual.  Then I move back to 25 yards with dove loads and shoot and adjust accordingly with 1/4 inch adjustment in mind and finally I shoot a turkey load at 40 to see what I've got and adjust accordingly.  At 40, your between 1/4 and 1/2 inch adjustment per click.

I sight basically the same way. I shoot a couple cheaper loads at 20 to verify the most dense area of the pattern, usually it's a big hole in the paper. Then I but my gun back on the sandbags and aim at the same point I just shot at. While I hold the same point of aim so the gun doesn't move, I have someone else adjust the sight so the dot moves to the most dense area of the pattern. Now I shoot another of the cheap loads to verify the poa is poi.  If it is where I want it I test it with a hunting load.

Once I'm satisfied at 20 I move to 40 and do the same thing. I do try to get cheap loads that are close to the same velocity as my hunting loads so there is not so much difference in the poi.

Good luck this season.

50ft junk dove loads.  2 inch high then back up to 40 and bust it off.   :anim_25:
