May stay in Chadron, and hunt nearby. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Thx, James

Lot of public out there, but I've never really hunted it much for turkeys. Have seen some birds on the public, and have seen lots of hunters though too. Valentine has lot of birds around there too.

Go late and watch the weather. The birds will be in winter flocks on private ground early.
When I turkey hunt I use a DSD decoy

If they are out of their wintering areas, get up in the pine ridges and cover some ground. You'll find em. Check out Fort Robinson, there's a good many in there too. Spend some time driving around and looking for tracks and strut marks up in the ridges. Don't think you can't roost em after dark either. They'll gobble at 10:00 sometimes. Just go hard and be agressive, there's a pile of turkeys in the area.

Went there two years ago after the big fire and man was it terrible looking, the fires really put a number on it. I don't know what it'll be like now but we did see a lot of birds, mostly on private and we saw tons of hunters on public. It was fun and I'll go back eventually but told myself to wait a few more years. We went the second week of May, it was hot and very little gobbling except early and late. Most birds were standing under a shade tree all day. We got on birds but it was mostly spot and stalk type of deals. We saw tons of turkeys, some antelope, elk, mule deer, and a lot of hunters, I was very surprised how many people were out there.

I second the later part of May.  The private stuff we hunt out that way always has lots of large groups of birds until late in may.  They're just starting to break out of their winter groups at that time it seems, but that's my take.

I've hunted public in mid April, mid May, and late May.  I experienced snow in April and struggled to find birds that would gobble more than once.  I heard the most gobbling in mid May.  I've done the best in late May
I've not experienced winter flocks in May but have experrienced extreme heat.  I think most of May is a safe bet.
