Has anyone had any experience hunting in Oklahoma.  Usually will drive around and try to get permission to private property if able, with a few public spots in an area for back up.  Anyone ever done DIY hunts there and know how tough it is to get permission on private. I assume the further west I get the better odds I have, but have heard that it's tough to get permission to land down there so though I'd ask if anyone had an idea.  Thanks.

If you're going to hunt public land, I would wait until after the first week and avoid weekends. Lots of land is leased these days.

Your right, higher bird numbers are west of I-35. Most people head to Black Kettle WMA. The high number of hunters out there has private land owners very reluctant to give permission.

THanks for the input fellas.

Lots of public land west of I-35. I would not tie my self down and stay mobile.  To many different WMA areas to not be able to find birds.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

I do DIY hunts everywhere I go, and Oklahoma is one of my absolute favorite states to hunt. Have never tried to find private land to hunt as there is plenty of public land with plenty of birds. I usually try to hunt 2 or 3 different areas as a lot of Oklahoma has a one bird per county rule. As for the hunting crowds, I have only run into 1 other hunter in the field, and he was from Louisiana, too.  Another great thing about Oklahoma, is the available camping areas.... the state parks are gorgeous and the Corps of Engineers camps are well placed for hunters. I will be in Mississippi until April 12 and then head up to Oklahoma around the 15th and stay thru the end of the season.... who knows? our paths may cross....  Take care and safe travels.
