Just curious what experience any members have had with planting oats for hunting whitetails in the fall. As far as what type of fertilizer and procedure you do to obtain the best results.

Thanks

Go to the local county agent. Bring them a coffee can of soil. THey can run a soil test and tell you exactly what/how much fertilizer to use.

I planted plain ol forage oats along with peas and winter rye last week and will let you know how they are doing next week,  along with checking your ph of the soil make sure the oats are planted in the ground a little.  I spread 12-12-12 fertilizer and disked it in with my groundhog max and it tore up plot pretty good.  I then spread the oats along with the other seeds and drove over it with my atv tires.  I didn't have time to take my lawn roller and press them into soil which would have been better but it did rain the next day so hopefully germination will be good.  I think oats do well about a quarter of an inch into the soil.  Scoot

^^.  Call the county agent and get a soil test.  For us, a blend of winter wheat as a base, mixed with ladino, white clover, and a mix of brassicas have been excellent. Primarily use triple 13 fertilizer. It's been excellent for us and the deer absolutely hammer it.   Definitely could spend more money on gettin the soil right but danget you can get into some money quick.   I have to many stinkin hobbies.  I'm sure oats will be great for ya. Just Sharing our recipe that has served us great for I beleive 4 years now. Good luck and lets see some pics when it gets up and growin

I'm gonna plant oats and rye this weekend along with some turnips. 10-10-10 works good for me. I also will throw a little pelletized lime on and some horse manure just because I have a nice pile behind the barn. We have heavy clay soil so getting  some good organic matter mixed in to loosen it up always helps.

Oats are a great choice to plant for deer. They can be attractive early on which can be good if your deer are not pressured. Once it gets cold they won't touch it very much. As far as what fertilizer to use, have a soil test done. I know that its a pain in the rear but having your soil right is one of the most beneficial things to have. Lets say you put out nitrogen without having a soil test done... Your soil may not need nitrogen but it may need phosphorus so basically you would be throwing money down the drain because your soil will not absorb it....
