After hunting Kansas for the first time this year in Jewell county, was wondering what recommendations do you guys have for hunting in Kansas as far as which county or counties? Was considering Washington county or something in the NE area but open to anywhere really. Already looking ahead to 2015 and season hasnt been over for hardly a day here in MO! Its a disease isnt it!!! :icon_thumright:

Jewell should be good. If you are hunting around the lake, take a thermacell and bug spray.  Mosquitoes can be horrible back in the sloughs

Genesis 27:3 - Now then, get your weapons—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.

We hunted around the lake this year and heard very very little gobbling.Birds seemed to be very spooky as well.Bugs and ticks were pretty bad but thankfully I had my thermacell for the skeeters. My 2 hunting partners did not fair as well in the bug bite department.

We considered trying Jewell again next year, just staying away from the lake area(other than to camp).Just wondering what other counties might hold more/better opportunities.Got a year to plan so looking at all options.

I've killed birds in 15+ KS counties, I have no clear favorites...

I would stay away from anything within 1.5 hours of KC, Topeka, or Lawrence. I'm a local and the public is getting so overhunted the last few years, it's discouraging.

I'm also a local, and could not agree more!

I've had decent luck around the Jewell, Republic, Mitchell, and Cloud counties.  Those are only counties I've hunted in, though.  All have both good and bad areas.  I totally agree about the bugs around ANY water out there.

ive hunted Jewell for several years and its good but if you go west and a little north the bird population is much better and finding ground is a little easier as well. I would try smith or phillips county and look for the large creek drainages as it turns into a little more open farming land up that way. if you make it to phillipsburg make sure you check regs...used to be only allowed one bird west of the highway going north or 2 birds east of there as that is the unit dividing line.phillipsburg is a decent little town with about all a guy needs for a hunting trip. cottonwood inn is a nice motel and there is good and groceries in town.  good luck
