Another successful youth season for my brother!! We got in my blind about 5:15 Saturday morning, the first morning of the NY youth turkey hunt.  They started gobbling on the limb @ 5:45. I could tell there were some jakes and a few mature birds gobbling.I waited til i knew they had flew down to any serious calling to them. They gobbled really well once they hit the ground but were only sparingly gobbling to my calls.I knew the turkeys were within a couple hundred  yards of us but they just wouldnt come to the call. They gobbled good for the first hour and then all of a sudden the woods went quiet @ 6:45and I pretty much stopped calling once they went silent.I was a little discouraged once they stopped gobbling. At about 7:20 i decided to try a different call and pulled out my favorite mouth call. I let out my first series of yelps and at least 5 birds gobbled back immediately from the same spot i heard them last. I told Carson to get ready. One more series of yelps and they gobbled back and i knew they had cut the distance between us in half! I knew they were coming from behind us but i was confident that they would come to the decoys set out in front of us.I was looking out of the back window of the blind and i saw 3 longbeards with some jakes in tow headed our way. Once they got out front of the blind @ 30 yards i did some soft calling and they gobbled right in our face!! Then the three long beards made a beeline for b-mobile and i knew it was gonna end badly for one of them!! Two of the long beards proceeded to really put a whooping on my decoy  like ive only seen on t.v.! The other bigger tom just kind of stayed by my hen decoy watching the show. Bad idea for him because carson swung his gun over to him and leveled him@ 20yds!!! Another awesome hunt that i got to film for him!! I knew he was a heavy bird when we went out and got him but wasnt sure on the weight. Theres a local youth turkey hunt contest held in town and we went to have carsons bird entered. The bird weighed in @ 24 pnds. 12 oz. 9&3/4" beard  with 3/4"spurs. I was like wow carson you just killed a bigger bird(weight wise) than i ever have!!I couldnt have been happier for him! The next day we went to the contest to see who had won and to get his prize pack.(all kids that enter a bird get a bunch free calls and turkey gear!) When we got there we see the first place ribbon pinned next to his name on the board!! He won the contest out of  22 kids that entered!! He gets a free professional fan mount for winning the contest!! He also had the heaviest bird ever entered in the contest! Needless to say the youth hunt was a big success for us this year!!

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.
